We are delighted to welcome Alt-Pop singer, Halston Dare to Divine Magazine. Halston has recently released a mesmerizing and beautiful track inspired by knowing your own worth and having the strength to break free from toxic relationships.  The track is called ‘Replace You’ and is melodic and empowering….We ‘Dare’ you to think otherwise.

Hello Halston and welcome to Divine! We hope you have been keeping safe, sane and productive! As usual, we like to warm our interviewees up so here is some silly fun stuff first.

What is the closest thing, in your mind, to real magic in the world?

Glitter! Lol I know that’s a little vague. But glitter makes me feel magical! Also, Disneyland!

If you could be a superhero, what would your superpower be and your superhero name?

Ace would be my superhero name, and I think I’d want to be able to teleport anywhere or morph into anything!

What was the last film you watched which you thought as really good?

Hollywood! One of my favorites right now.

You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Pink/purple lilac. It’s MY FAVORITE COLOR!

What is your favorite junk food to eat, if any?

Cheetos puffs, M&M’s chocolate bar, bagel bites!

What would be a good theme song for your life?

‘Life in the Fast Lane’ by The Eagles

And now to the more serious ones…

‘Replace You’ was inspired by a toxic relationship. What is your song saying about this?

‘Replace You’ is my newest single that I just released in April. I wrote it back in November of 2019 when I was dealing with an argument with a boyfriend at the time who was making me beg for his attention, and I was chasing after him instead of him chasing after me. It was a time in my life that I didn’t understand my self-worth, I didn’t understand the love that I deserve, and I didn’t understand what it really meant to love myself. During the argument that I was having with him, I was quickly realizing that I was fighting for somebody who didn’t want to fight for me and somebody who also was acting like they were irreplaceable and that was definitely not the case. I was calling all of my friends that night crying and one of them was looking at me telling me “Halston you have to write a song about this!” The next day I went into the studio to write a song with my favorite producer and writer Michelle Buzz, and I walked in and told her this kid thinks he’s irreplaceable!! And later that day we knew we were creating something super special, and that is how ‘Replace You’ was written.

With Houston being a place you go to escape work life, does this help you formulate new ideas and songs?

It doesn’t matter where I am, I can always find a cool idea to write about. Drama happens anywhere at any time of the day, unfortunately.

Are you finding the isolation of the pandemic conducive to your writing or is it hindering the experiences you can write about?

Drama is always around. Even though this pandemic has been really surprising and not the best thing to anyone’s life right now, my writing life has not changed. In fact, I actually wrote some really cool songs during the quarantine.

What lead you to become a music artist and what advice can you give to others aspiring to make a hit?

Singing has always been a part of my life. My dad grew up singing as well and he absolutely influenced me a lot to become a singer. I’ve always enjoyed performing on stage and writing music and listening to music and I always had a good feeling that I would become a performer someday. Any advice that I have for other aspiring musicians is don’t give up, constantly reinvent yourself, and don’t stop trying. When things don’t work out try to find a new way, love who you are and surround yourself with people who are supportive of you and your decisions

Which two artists have defined your music taste and who would you love to collaborate with in the future?

Julia Michaels and Halsey and The Weeknd have really influenced my music taste. Someday I would love to collab with Bazzi, The Weeknd, Halsey, Julia Michaels, and honestly so many more!!

What can we expect from you in the future?

Everyone can expect new music, music videos and touring dates in the future! It’s going to be crazy exciting!!!
