When Rock Bottom Becomes Sacred Ground: God Has No Boundaries-So Why Do We?

After years of trying to obtain an American visa at the tender age of 21 to 24 years old, Melissa Core-Caballo had lost all hope. The dream she’d been chasing since she was nine years old felt just out of reach, and the rejection left her feeling defeated. But that heartbreak was only the beginning. She was grieving the unexpected death of her dear friend, who passed by suicide. Burned out. Spiritually lost. Emotionally gutted. Far away in Australia and barely holding it together. Each day was a battle to survive the grief while still showing up to her promotions job at i98 FM Radio—pretending life was moving forward when, inside, everything felt like it had stopped. Drained and broken, she questioned whether she had anything left to give. It was an experience that would forever alter the course of her life.

But in the darkest moments, when everything felt shattered, something greater took hold. “I had lost all hope of obtaining an American work visa—even after having some of the best people in Nashville work on it with me for over four years. My relationship at the time was coming to an end, and the loss of my high school friend was destroying me. I don’t think I had ever felt so lost or so close to the end of my road.”

“I remember walking from the radio station to the WIN TV headquarters in Wollongong, NSW—it was a gloomy day. As I put my hand on the door handle, a beam of sunshine broke through the clouds and warmed my hand—my whole body, really—like I was in a warm trance. Then a voice spoke to me. I truly believe it was my dear friend who had recently passed. He said, ‘Mel, what are you doing? You want to be in America. You’ve always wanted to live there.’ He began listing off the accomplishments I’d achieved in the U.S. over the last few years—his voice sounding proud, reminding me of the fire I’d always carried. ‘Don’t give up,’ he said. ‘Go check the visas now.’”

To Melissa’s surprise, she returned to her desk, took a deep breath, and decided to follow the advice she’d just heard. She searched online to see if any new visas had been released—and to her complete shock, one had. The J-1 Visa had just become available, allowing Australians with at least one year of post-secondary education to not only travel to the U.S. for a year, but also work while they were there in any field. It was the breakthrough she never saw coming.

“My life turned upside down—going from rock bottom to a world of endless opportunities—and in that instant, my fire came back. I know who spoke to me. I’ve always had a strong faith. My grandmother used to take me to church and helped me connect with our heavenly source and Creator. God came to me that day in the way He knew I would understand, in my darkest moment. There’s no other explanation. That was it.”

Whether your belief system calls it God, a higher power, a guardian angel, or simply a quiet voice within–it was there very strong and very direct. A subtle but persistent pull that refused to let her give up. “That voice inside me kept guiding me forward, even when I felt I had nothing left. If I hadn’t followed that message from above–or truly understood what faith meant in my life–none of the dreams I’ve achieved or battles I’ve conquered would have been possible.”

But it wasn’t until she completely broke down—grieving, uncertain, and desperate for direction—that her true journey began. With no financial safety net, no adult guidance, just having heart and faith to guide her, Melissa left Australia for the U.S. to build a new life from scratch.
