Twenty2 Today Interviews Crystal Starr
Crystal Starr's "Head Over Heels" is All About Love
Two-time award-winning recording artist Crystal Starr just released her single, “Head Over Heels,” for her forthcoming album, Popstarr.
Starr has made a name for herself through her powerful vocals and fun, modern twist to ‘80s and ‘90s pop music. “Head Over Heels” pays tribute to relationships, in particular, her grandparents’ relationship. “My grandparents didn't just cancel each other when they disagreed,” says Starr. “They worked through it and respected each other.” The singer adds, “I think our world needs a little more love and compassion in today’s society.”

TWENTY2: CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE SNEAK PEEK INTO YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? HOW WAS "HEAD OVER HEELS" MADE?
I began working with Keith Harris and Renard Hughes on this song during the pandemic. It was the second song we wrote for the album, and I was inspired to write it based on my grandparents.
TWENTY2: IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR FAMILY CULTURES IMPACT THE STYLE OF YOUR MUSIC. HOW HAS THAT HELPED YOU SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM OTHER UP & COMING ARTISTS?
I'm not sure how it separates me, but I do know that we listened to all types of music growing up, from salsa to soul music. I'm Puerto Rican and black, so my family listened to a variety of music. I have an appreciation for all types of music and try not to box myself into any category someone may try to fit me into.
TWENTY2: BEING A SINGER SEEMS SO GLAMOROUS! WHAT'S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT FOR YOU? The most challenging part for me, I believe, is taking time off. As an artist, you need to know how to do everything and do everything well. From makeup and hair to editing--basically it all! So, balancing time off is a very important part of being an artist.
TWENTY2: YOU SEEM BUSY! WHAT CAN READERS EXPECT FROM YOU THIS YEAR?
My album Pop Starr will be released shortly after “Head Over Heels,” which you can listen to now! After that, I'm planning to go on a tour. I'm grateful and looking forward to all the things!
The new album track is produced by Grammy Award-winning American record producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Keith Harris, as well as record producer and engineer Renard Hughes. Listen now!
