CONFIDENCE AND CREATIVITY: MUSICIAN FINDS KEY TO REINVENTING PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL

Brett Lucas continues to expand The Academy of Music Dance Drama through increased enrollment and growing curriculum

Thirroul, NSW - Brett Lucas, the reinvented founder of The Academy of Music Dance Drama, runs his school with this in mind: “I am on a mission to empower the creative minds and create more creative markets.” Brett has run The Academy of Music Dance Drama since 2018 and has continuously worked to transform it into the South Coast’s leading performing arts school, refusing to let a global pandemic stand in his way. Brett has increased student enrollment despite the standstill that COVID-19 has created for most people. In his three years of owning The Academy of Music Dance Drama, Brett took enrollment from 75 to over 250 students, with most new additions within the past year.

Before he took over The Academy of Music Dance Drama, Brett was a performer himself, freelancing with the Melbourne Symphony, State Orchestra of Victoria, Australian Ballet, Australian Opera, and other professional arts organizations. He graduated from Victoria College of Arts with a performance degree and soon after got his teaching degree. Following a few years in the corporate field, he felt he wasn’t getting enough value from the work he was doing so he turned to social work. There he learned all about how he could make a difference for people and he went on to complete his MBA with a focus on social impact.

Brett’s background in performing, teaching, and working as a social worker provided him with a wide range of knowledge and tools necessary to run a performing arts school and take it to the next level. Brett works, not just to teach students how to perform, but also to have confidence in their ability and creativity in their product.

“I believe in the difference to encourage and nurture community spirit by having a safe place to grow and create skills and confidence without judgment,” said Brett. “Not everybody will become the best performer but the soft skills and presentation certainly give the student a competitive edge in their school and potential working lives.”

Participation in the arts is proven to help children develop their motor skills, grow their imagination, and improve their academic performance. Brett acknowledges that while not everyone is destined to be a great artist, taking part in the arts can help students to develop a variety of life skills off the stage.

“As the leader of The Academy of Music Dance Drama, Brett brings not only his experience to the mission of enriching our children’s lives through creative expression, he also cares about families and community,” said Danielle Dobson, author, speaker, and parent to three students at The Academy of Music Dance Drama.

Brett is currently completing his Master of Laws at the University of New South Wales, which he hopes to use to add more curriculum to The Academy of Music Dance Drama by including the legal side of the arts in classes.

Running The Academy of Music Dance Drama with a focus on confidence and creativity is what helps set Brett’s worldview apart from any other performing arts school. He sets his students up for success in many different aspects of life, helping to prepare them for whatever their future may hold. About Brett Lucas:

Brett Lucas has been involved in the arts since he was a child, attending Victorian College of the Arts and performing as a freelancer performing with the Melbourne Symphony, State Orchestra of Victoria, Australian Ballet, Australian Opera and many other professional Arts organizations, all before the age of 19. After getting his degree in performance, he went on to complete his teaching degree, where his passion for performing soon developed into inspiring and encouraging the next generation to go after their dreams.

In 2009, Brett realized the corporate lifestyle didn’t give him any value and he didn’t feel like he was helping people to the best of his ability. He put his MBA on hold and began working as a social worker, where he was able to develop a better understanding of social change and how he could be a part of that change. Brett went on to complete his MBA but this time with a focus on social impact. With such a broad range of experience, Brett is able to use his skills to create a well-rounded experience for his students.

Since taking over The Academy of Music Dance Drama in 2018, Brett has completely reinvented the school. Enrollment has more than tripled, class offerings have expanded, and a large focus has shifted on growing the confidence and creativity of each student. “I am on a mission to empower the creative minds and create more creative markets,” says Brett. “It’s not just the promise of the ‘belting out the ballad’ Celine Dion-style or making it on X-Factor. I want performers to make a difference to their own happiness whatever it may be, through developing their own values and being part of the community.”

Now that the success of The Academy of Music Dance Drama has taken off, Brett is in the process of completing his Master of Laws at the University of New South Wales in order to grow the school even more and help the students understand all of the legal aspects of the performing industry. Brett is not only growing his school but also assisting other businesses and individuals in expanding their strategies in the arts. This multifaceted man is always learning, not just from his schooling, but from his students, and is always trying to be the best that he can be.
