Meet Nashville’s Rising Stars: Cash Crawford

I don’t know if there are five things… but two things stick out in my mind… One, never try to be anyone else. It’s okay to emulate, but always be authentic in your work… and two, it’s never too early or too late. Your timing and journey is yours and things will happen in just the right timing.

Asa part of our series about Nashville’s rising stars, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Cash Crawford. For over 20 years, Cash Crawford has been involved in the music industry as a noteworthy vocalist, songwriter, and entertainer. Growing up in a rural area of Pritchard, Canada, Cash and her sister Sadie would sing every chance they got, even if it was walking down their driveway to the bus, or going to church on Sunday. In 2008, Cash participated in Canadian Idol, making it to the third round just before being televised. After Canadian Idol, Cash went on to travel across Canada performing as one half of the duo ‘Beyond the Mountain’ with Theo Tams. This project won her the Toronto Independent Music Awards for Singer/Songwriter of the Year in 2012. During this time, Cash also worked as a voice actor and wrote solo music. Her original projects have earned her Rising Star, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year nominations. Since moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 2016, she continues to hone her skills both on and off the stage. In 2019, Cash released “Stevie”, her single written about her idol Stevie Nicks, with David Tolliver. Most recently, she has been working with producer Don Miggs in Nashville, TN. If you’re looking for powerhouse vocals, Cash is your woman! Despite her ability to emulate the likenesses of softer vocalists such as Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks, Ellie Goulding, and Taylor Swift, Cash excels at recording strong vocals in the style of Adele, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, and Carrie Underwood.

Thank you so much for joining us in this series! Our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. Can you tell us a bit of the ‘backstory’ of how you grew up? I grew up in a tiny little town called Pritchard in British Columbia, Canada. I got my musical start singing in my little church there.

Can you share a story with us about what brought you to this specific career path? I think it found me as a child. Singing and performing is something I’ve always done, even as a toddler and I think it just always has been in my bones.

Can you tell us the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career? The difference in people you attract to you when you’re doing what you love. The Universe has been bringing me exactly who I’ve needed.

Can you share with us an interesting story about living in Nashville? I was out with my sister and someone thought I was Shelly Fairchild. She’s a well known and well loved musician here in Nashville and we look very similar. I was so excited someone thought I was her!

Can you share with us a few of the best parts of living in Nashville? We’d love to hear some specific examples or stories about that.

I think one of the best parts of living and playing in Nashville is the people I get to meet and sometimes end up working with. Most of the people I’ve collaborated with I’ve met while on a stage or watching them play. It’s such a cool town to build creative relationships with like minded people.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that? I think blowing some notes and getting the giggles from it on stage is pretty funny. It happens to me a lot. I used to hate it and get really embarrassed… but now I take it as a reminder that I’m just a human, and it’s okay for me to make mistakes. It’s how we learn.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that? I’ve had a LOT of help along the way. From a number of different people. I would have to say that my family (and chosen family) have been the most important group of people though… from letting me live in spare rooms and feeding me, to encouraging me to keep going when I’ve wanted to quit. They come to my shows and blast my songs… They’re just the most supportive.

What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now? I think “Save Myself” and the next two singles are the most exciting things I’ve worked on in a while. I’m really focused on being honest and authentic with these songs and I have a great team that really supports what I want to share.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. Please share a story or example for each. I don’t know if there are five things… but two things stick out in my mind… One, never try to be anyone else. It’s okay to emulate, but always be authentic in your work… and two, it’s never too early or too late. Your timing and journey is yours and things will happen in just the right timing.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”? Remember to REST!!! No amount of money can buy your health.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-) I think I would draw more awareness to holistics. I believe that if we really look, listen and learn, the earth provides us everything we need for healing, nutrition and a better sense of well being.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life? Work smarter not harder. I had to learn this the hard way through burn out. Since then, I’ve gone to places that value my abilities more… which means I make more.

Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. :-) Stevie Nicks. She’s magical. I’ve written a song about her!!
